What To Say To Get Referrals: Single Best Thing | Strike Zone

Sharing a Single Best Thing tells Team Members you understand their strike zone.

Think of a Single Best Thing you learned about a Team Member at coffee –

  1. Where have you shared that that Single Best Thing?
  2. How has the Team Member benefited?
  3. How have you benefited?

(Don’t repeat an answer.)

One favorite way to use a Single Best Thing I learned at coffee is when I'm introducing two Members, and they have something in common.
Saying to Andrew, "This is Doug Ross, he used to live in Flint."
Then to Doug, "Doug, meet Andrew, he's from Detroit."
Gives them something in common to talk about instantly.

So - for me, a Single Best Thing is something I can use. That's how I benefit.

During coffee, I discovered that one of my Team Members is exceptional at creating "Purple Cards" for others. I've heard Wendy say it: "It's a lot easier to create a Purple Card for another than it is to create your own. Experiencing that was priceless. So we began to play the Purple Card game. You create one for me, and I create one for you. We played several rounds. Both came away with a list of over 20 Purple Cards. It's the gift that keeps on giving. I share and practice that Single Best Thing at almost every coffee date.

I had a coffee recently with one of our newest members who holds the HVAC seat, Jermaine Williams.  The conversation came around to some of the additional services his company provides and when he mentioned duct cleaning.  I’m currently rehabbing my basement which is creating a lot of dust, so I can use that service once I’m done with that work.

I shared that with my wife and she agreed, so we will be following up with him soon to have that done.

This also gives additional information I can pass along to others I speak with for more potential referrals.

The single best thing is from an accountant. He was talking about personal deductions for moving expenses. When I was in the corporate world, I was able to deduct moving expenses. I learned in his talk that currently, that is not allowed unless you are in the military.  I was able to share that information with a friend who is considering moving for a new job.

I met for a PowerBrew with Jai Lee Galanti and she educated me about the work that she does in Pilates. The single best thing for me was the benefits that Pilates has for some of the emotional issues that people are going through. Before meeting with Jai Lee, I didn't consider a Pilates studio as a good gate opener for elder care consulting.  After meeting with her, I realize that many of my clients who are going through the emotional stress of caring for an aging parent would be excellent referrals for Jai Lee.  I've told the story to other people that I coach in the world of elder care consulting to help them understand how important it is to really understand a potential gate opener's best clients.  It may result in a new Referral relationship that you may never have thought was possible.

When sharing single best things, I look for commonality to support building rapport which can allow the person to feel understood by the Team Member. One single best thing I shared was that the Team Member had a dog and since carpet cleaning, vent cleaning, etc. was his job, he understood the importance of how dog hair can get everywhere. The Team Member benefited by getting a referral and I benefited with aquiring a deeper trust in the client since I cared enough to share their contact information.
