    One of the things we can see from We Did Business slips is the ramp during the first 18 months someone is a Member. It’s striking.

    Our process gives people a 3-month evaluation period (as much for the Team to evaluate them) and it is unrealistic to expect great referrals during that time. (For one thing, Team Members haven’t gotten to know the new Member yet. For another, they are probably still doing “salesy” InfoMinutes.)

    The good referrals start in month 4 – and there are more and more, continuously, for the next year.

    Then it gets anecdotal. (Which my friend who does data for the CDC tells me is empirical.) Five year Members tell me the number of referrals they get is “embarrassing.” Ten year Member have told me they go for six months at a time with a WDB to turn in every week.

    The question is “How long?” – and I have three answers:
    1: Three months tells whether there’s a conceptual fit.
    2: Eighteen months gives Members time to process the change to referral marketing. (One Member wisely told me she didn’t know whether it worked or not until she got good at it – to quit before she was good at it would not have been a true result.)
    3: Three years to maximize connections – then ask “Have I gotten everything there is to get here?” (When I’m working with private clients that’s my rule for every association – make a 3 year decision, participate fully, then evaluate a year at a time.)

    Metaphor: Time for referrals is equivalent to a battery in a power tool.

    The length of coaching engagement(and process as well)is specific to each client’s need. For a client pursuing a career change, the engagement is usually 6 – 10 one-hour sessions, and as needed after that. A typical path would include a session each on (1) defining their core values, (2) determining their strengths (we dig really deep here, beneath the bulleted resume list), (3) lateral skill mapping, (4) targeted industries/roles and the throughlines that link yesterday with tomorrow, (5) resume strategy (usually with a resume writer) and (6) custom cover letter strategies as needed. Each of these topics requires at least an hour in exploration and de-briefing, sometimes more. Clients are free to release me whenever they feel ready to take action with confidence, because fees are charged hourly – clients are not obligated to packaged services.

    One of the most common interactions I have with a client centers around redesigning or updating their logo/artwork. The length of this process varies, but it always involves close communication between the client, myself, and our art staff. Often we talk several times a day via phone, text, email, and/or videoconference. Once the client is satisfied with the new artwork and the products are in the production queue, I can safely remove the clamps and know that their new packaging is on its way!

    Typically my clients have had a recent medical visit and have been encouraged to make lifestyle changes. Sometimes a customer gets it immediately and other times I send clinically backed research and or videos on the product they are interested. It is imperative that I clamp down and continue to explain that results vary, most understand, and after a few months of being faithful with taking their product, something has changed for the better and I can release the grip. Now a believer in the power of plants has formed.

    The outcome most desired for a client of ours is the point in their life where they don’t need life insurance any longer (what insurance agent would ever want that :-)) In their early years when they have kids, mortgage and not much money saved they need allot of life insurance. We work with them over 10-15-20 years to help them get to a point where they are self insured. It takes that many years to get the kids on their own, mortgage eliminated or significantly reduced and they have money saved. The most rewarding calls I get after 22 years of being in business is “we are SELF insured” 🙂

    In the payroll space, the outcome is always Friday. “We need checks this Friday” or “Can we get started this Friday?”. The timeline is very simple and the answer is almost always “yes!”. I can clamp together all of the information Paychex will need to get my clients started and once we have processed the first payroll, those clamps can be loosened slowly over time so that my clients have the freedom to focus on what it is they created their business for in the first place and succeeded at it!

    Many of my clients use tri-fold brochures in their marketing, and I lead them through the process from concept to design to printing. Typically, the client will provide me with a logo and their text, and I take it from there. I welcome any input such as color choices and paper preferences, and I am always willing to offer suggestions. The design, layout and proofing process usually takes about a week. I allow that amount of time in case there are multiple edits … I want everything to be exactly what my client is looking for, and sometimes it takes a few proofs to make that happen. The print process takes a week, and we either deliver or ship the finished product.

    An ideal outcome for me, when dealing with a new client, is that they have the resources to meet their wellness goals and feel empowered to care for themselves and their loved ones. This happens when they have the products to support their needs, and the required education on where to find the answers to their future questions. While this process varies for each individual, I generally schedule 6 weeks for this to occur. Through a series of follow ups I ensure that my new clients are instructed on the use of the products purchased, and know where to find more information (via resource books, mobile apps and our online community).

    One of the solutions that I provide when helping a client is identifying the best lending solution to meet their borrowing needs. Lately, I have been helping many of my clients with a home equity line of credit. An ideal outcome would be being able to go through the home equity line application and approval process and getting this taken care of on a timely manner so that they have funds available to use. On average this process will take about three weeks from start of application to finish as long as borrower is able to provide financial information requested up front and as long as we have not setbacks such as title challenges. If we do have a challenge then it may be a little more than three weeks depending on what we are taking care of. Although, on average I may work closely with our borrower for three weeks, follow up is important. I stay connected with my clients and call them to check in every few months and see if anything has changed since we last have talked or see if they have any other needs.

    A frequent outcome for my business is a closing. Whether buyers or sellers, the desired outcome is closing on a home. The contract to close process is typically 30 days and the clamps that hold the process together are vital to get everyone to the closing take on time

    Each client and each job is different. For example, an exterior re-paint starts with an interview with the client and after they receive an estimate. It takes the client about two to three days to make their decision. After that it takes a day to pressure wash the outside of the house, and about another three days to complete the job. In total, a typical exterior re-paint will take about eight days to complete.

    This time frame is important so that we have plenty of time to cover all the essentials, but also get it running without getting caught in the weeds.
