I had failed a test and was ashamed to show it to my family. Mrs. Atkins, my second-grade teacher, saw me crumble the paper in my hand and came to me. Gently she told me to do not be ashamed that you failed, there is always room for improvement. Leaders can fail.
We are all human and not perfect. A leader recognizes that there are times he will fail. His attitude after he fails is what matters. Elon Musk, owner of Tesla, has failed many times in his career. Every time, he improves and solves the problem as to why he failed. This is a mark of a good and successful leader.
I carry this attitude in my business, I am not perfect. If I make a mistake or fail, I recognize and own it. I apologize to my clients and ask to remedy the situation. Clients appreciate this because it shows that I care. I care enough to make it right. I want to solve the problem and make my clients successful which in turn makes my business successful. Clients, employees, investors, etc., make the business. Without them, the businesses cease to exist. Remember, LEADERS CAN FAIL, what matters is how they overcome it.
Never stop learning. My manager had a policy: come in 30 minutes early and learn something. We were typically studying for Cisco certifications, or equipment certifications, or simply learning about the latest and greatest technology available. I have incorporated this into my business and encourage my employees to learn about the equipment that is available to us and how to best deploy it.
