What To Do To Give Referrals: Referral Records | Ingredients

Questions are an essential ingredient for referrals. This month’s theme is What to DO TO GIVE Referrals, and the topic is Referral Records.

  • What question do you always ask at a PowerBrew? What does it tell you?
  • What’s your favorite question in the PowerPerk? Why?
  • What question helps you decide whether to choose Perk or Brew?

  • I often ask how they got into this industry. It tells me who they may have something in common with.
  • I'm the creator of question #6 - "Who is not your client?"  It's just a one minute answer, and important to keep from giving "bad" connections. There's a particular Member whose sweet spot is $200,000. Members who ask them to do a $2,000 project are always going to be disappointed, because both people think they're doing the other person "a favor." Would have been better to say no to the job than leave a bad taste in another Member's experience.
  • When I'm introducing someone who I think has the potential to be a GateOpener, I'm always going to Perk. The Member's answers will quickly show the GateOpener whether there is a values match.

I just got back from a wonderful PowerPerk: even though the questions are things we talk about in PowerBrews as well, there is something about the format that means I always learn something new.

I agree about the last question: who is a bad client. It's a short answer but that means it often leads to follow up coffees. If "X" is a bad client, tell me more about the opposite of "X", or behaviours of both "X" and its opposite, etc.

As for PowerBrews: when I prepare I always leave a space for "How can I refer this person"? and to fill that in, I like to ask: "I often talk to clients about ....., how does that conversation relate to your work and how can I lead you into it?"

One question I like to ask is pretty general.... "what's the latest in your business?"  That could go a lot of places but it opens the door to the person answering to go a lot of places... employees, general business activity, new products, etc.

In the Power Perk I like to talk about best customers.  This allows me and others to focus in on who we should be looking for as a referral.  We could talk forever about generalities but getting focused gets us there quicker.

I enjoy perks and brews.. and the people that join me.  Whether we do one or the other depends on timing for all involved.

A question that I like to ask at a PowerBrew is what's new and exciting in your world?  This question opens up infinite possibilities both personal and professional that can give insight into individual and their relatability.

My favorite PowerPerk question is #3 Give Us A Connection Clue.  This helps me identify when someone is ready or not ready to work with them.

As a newer member, I prefer the Power Brew. It allows me to get to know other members even more. I have done a Power Perk and loved it as well.
