What To Do To Give Referrals: Action > Single Best Thing

Single Best Things are a way to give.

Sharing a Single Best Thing at the meeting shows you were giving attention to the speaker.

Sharing it with a client is the beginning of a referral conversation.

  • Tell about a time you shared a Single Best Thing with someone who wasn’t at the meeting.
  • What was their reaction?

When my son moved into his new home and was ready to renovate the bathroom, I told him about Mike Smith. I said, “Mike’s a renovation expert who combines the precision of an engineer with the flair of an artist. With him, you get something that lasts and something you’ll love every day you see it.” My son said, “Please connect me.”

He ended up choosing someone else, but after the dust settled, literally, he came back and said, “I should’ve gone with Mike.”

That moment reminded me: sharing a Single Best Thing helps people make the very best decisions they can.

During a coffee, Jerome Mills mentioned that in addition to personal insurance policies, he was also able to do commercial policies.  This was new information and a Single Best Thing I got from that conversation.

Not long after that, I was having a conversation with one of the trustees at our church, and he mentioned that the long-time insurance company for the church was dropping them from coverage.  I was able to connect him with Jerome, and he did an outstanding job for him, finding the best coverage at the lowest cost, so our church was able to replace its coverage.

Recently, I referred one of my clients—a lighting design architect—to John Medina, the financial advisor in our group. My client had expressed interest in strategically using the profits from his business. He didn't want to reinvest all of them back into the business; instead, he wanted guidance on directing that money into personal investments to build a secure financial future. During John's presentation, my Single Best Thing takeaway was his clear strategy for transitioning business profits into personal wealth. When I shared this specific insight with my client, his reaction was enthusiastic: he said, "That's exactly the type of help I've been looking for—someone who can show me how to effectively grow my personal nest egg from my business earnings." Sharing that Single Best Thing immediately sparked a referral conversation and positioned John as the ideal resource.

I referred a PowerCore member to someone outside the group by sharing their Single Best Thing from that week’s InfoMinute. It was exactly the service that person needed, so it made it easy to show they were the right fit. The reaction was great—they reached out and connected for service.
